St Peter & St Paul’s is Olney’s parish church and one of the most recognisable buildings in the north of the Milton Keynes borough. The main body of the church went up in the fourteenth century in the Decorated Gothic style, and it is Grade I listed — most of all for its broach spire, which rises 185 feet from the bank of the River Great Ouse and can be seen for miles across the valley. This is also John Newton’s church: the writer of Amazing Grace was curate here from 1764 to 1779, and the hymn was first sung in this church in 1773.

For couples, the practical news is that the parish actively welcomes weddings. If you live in the parish you can marry here as of right, and couples from outside Olney can qualify through one of the recognised connections — the parish office walks you through it. The church’s size is a real asset for a wedding: a long nave, a wide chancel, and room for a big congregation without anyone feeling packed in.

Photographing a wedding at Olney

Mediaeval churches can be dark; this one is kinder than most. The nave is tall with clerestory windows, and the west window throws good light down the red-carpet aisle for most of the day — so I photograph the ceremony itself quietly on natural light, long lenses from the aisle and the side, no flash and no interruptions. The processional down that aisle, the vows at the chancel steps, and the walk back out as a married couple under the stained glass are the anchor shots of the day.

Outside is where the church really pays off. The confetti line forms on the green by the porch, with the stone tower filling the frame above the couple — the gallery hero on this page is exactly that moment. The churchyard, the arched west door and the approach with the spire behind all give portrait backdrops that no hotel can match, and the bridal-party group at the church door has become one of my favourite formals anywhere I shoot.

The reception at the Holiday Inn Milton Keynes East

Olney sits about twenty minutes north of Central Milton Keynes, and most couples marry here and hold the reception nearby. The wedding in this gallery started and finished at the Holiday Inn Milton Keynes East in Newport Pagnell, a fifteen-minute drive away: bridal preparations in the hotel that morning, then back after the ceremony, where the ivy-clad Georgian frontage took the wedding-car arrivals and couple portraits, and the evening ran through speeches, cake and a first dance in the panelled suite. I cover the full day as one story: preparations, church, travel, reception, dancing.

Logistics for guests

The church is on Church Street at the southern edge of Olney, beside the river. Street parking nearby fills quickly on a Saturday, so wedding parties usually direct guests to the town’s public car parks a few minutes’ walk away — worth a line on the invitations. Olney’s market square, with its pubs and cafés, is a five-minute stroll for guests with time between ceremony and reception, and Milton Keynes, Bedford and Northampton are all within half an hour by car.
