St Mary’s stands at the heart of Orlingbury, a Northamptonshire village four miles north of Wellingborough. The church you see today was built in 1843 by the architect R.C. Hussey on the site of the medieval original, and it earns its Grade II* listing: fourteenth-century Decorated style in local ironstone, embattled parapets, a cruciform plan under a lofty central tower, and — the detail every wedding here benefits from — a circular rose window at the east end, directly above the altar.

The rebuild kept the old church’s treasures. A fourteenth-century font, a Jacobean screen, and in a recess the alabaster effigy of a knight reputed to be Jack of Badsaddle, who local legend credits with killing the last wolf in England. Six bells hang in the tower — three as old as the church, the ring completed for its 150th anniversary — and they’re rung to celebrate weddings. The nave seats 260, so even a big guest list fits without a squeeze.

Photographing a wedding at St Mary’s

The aisleless nave is a photographer’s friend: no pillars between the pews and the chancel, so every guest — and every lens — has a clear line to the couple. The vows happen at the chancel steps with the rose window glowing behind, and I photograph the ceremony quietly from the aisle and the transepts on natural light, within whatever the rector has agreed.

Outside is where Orlingbury shows off. The confetti line forms on the green in front of the ironstone frontage, the churchyard gate sits directly beneath the embattled central tower for the classic newlywed portrait, and the flower-arched lantern gate frames a kiss perfectly. The stone-walled village lanes around the green give the bridal party a relaxed walking set-piece without anyone getting in a car.

From the church to the reception

Most couples marrying at St Mary’s hold the reception in a village hall or venue nearby, and I cover the move as part of the story. The wedding in this gallery ran on to a hall reception — top-table speeches behind banks of hydrangeas, a father-of-the-bride toast, the groom surviving the best man’s stories, and heart-shaped sunglasses once the evening got going.

Logistics for guests

Orlingbury sits just off the A509 between Wellingborough and Kettering, with Milton Keynes, Northampton and Bedford all within easy driving distance. Parking around the village green is limited on a Saturday, so wedding parties usually stagger arrivals or point guests to the surrounding lanes — worth a line on the invitations. The village green itself, ringed by stone cottages, doubles as a backdrop for group photographs while the bells ring out overhead.
