Outdoor family photography
Outdoor family photography at Milton Keynes favourites — Willen Lake, Campbell Park, Caldecotte Lake, and the Tree Cathedral. Natural light, real moments, kids-paced sessions from £199.
Real family life, captured calmly outdoors
The best outdoor family sessions don’t feel like a photoshoot. We meet at the location, the kids run around for ten minutes to burn off the awkwardness, and then I follow your family at a relaxed pace — picking up the moments where everyone’s actually being themselves. Parents tell me they forget the camera is there within the first quarter of an hour, and that’s when the photos start working.
I’ll suggest a few light prompts (walk this way together, sit here for a minute, lift the little one up) but never insist on stiff posed lines. If your toddler wants to chase ducks rather than smile at me, we go with the ducks — and those usually become the album favourites.
Where we’ll shoot
For most Milton Keynes families I recommend one of four locations, depending on the season and the age of your children:
Willen Lake is my workhorse — open water, mature woodland, the Peace Pagoda, and enough variety in a single park to make every session look distinct. Easy parking, easy logistics, lots of options if the weather turns.
Campbell Park suits older kids who can run. The big lawns and the iconic spiral pyramid give cinematic wide shots; the lavender and rose gardens at the eastern end are gorgeous in summer.
Caldecotte Lake is the quieter alternative — fewer dog-walkers, a waterside mill that makes a beautiful backdrop, and reedy edges that look romantic in late-afternoon light.
The Tree Cathedral is where I take families who want something a bit more atmospheric. The mature trees laid out in a cathedral floor-plan give you that filtered, dappled light that makes skin tones glow without any editing tricks.
For a summer-only highlight, lavender field sessions (late June through early July) make for striking sunset portraits — purple rows, pink-and-gold sky, single-image keepers that end up framed on the wall. Ask when enquiring and we’ll plan around peak bloom and the closest lavender farm to you.
If you have a place that means something to your family — a garden, a favourite woodland, a riverside walk — I’m happy to travel within Buckinghamshire and shoot there instead.
What to wear
Soft, complementary tones (creams, sage, dusty pink, warm earth, navy) photograph far better than logos or busy patterns. You don’t need everyone in the same colour, just nothing that fights the others. Layers are useful — kids tend to overheat, and removing a jumper mid-session changes the look without changing locations. I’ll send detailed wardrobe notes once we book.
What happens next
Most outdoor family sessions are confirmed within 24 hours of enquiry. We’ll lock in a date, choose a location, and I’ll send a short pre-session questionnaire (favourite snacks for the kids, anyone in the family with a quirk to handle gently, any specific shots you want). On the day, I arrive ten minutes early, walk the location, and we begin. Galleries are delivered within 2–3 weeks via a private online gallery with download rights for personal use.

Parents often ask
-
When is the best time to have a family shoot?
The golden hour — about an hour before sunset — gives the most beautiful, warm light for outdoor sessions. Spring and autumn are my favourite times for Milton Keynes shoots: blossom and fresh greenery in spring, then earthy tones and golden leaves in autumn. That said, mid-morning sessions work brilliantly for younger children who fade by late afternoon. Studio sessions can run any time of day since lighting is controlled. -
My child is shy or restless — will the photos still work?
Absolutely — getting natural reactions from children is what I do every week. I work patiently, give kids time to warm up, and capture genuine play and connection rather than asking them to pose. Bringing a favourite toy or snack helps. Sessions are paced so we never rush — restless children get the best results when we let them lead a bit. -
Where do family photoshoots happen?
Outdoor family sessions are most often shot at Willen Lake, Campbell Park, Caldecotte Lake, or The Tree Cathedral — all in Milton Keynes — though I'm happy to travel to a location of your choice in the surrounding area. Studio sessions take place in a controlled indoor space, ideal for cake smash, milestone portraits, and any-weather backups. -
How much does a family photoshoot cost?
Outdoor family sessions start from £200 for a 90-minute shoot with 15 carefully edited high-resolution images. Pricing varies by session type, group size, and the number of edited images — for example, larger group shoots, studio cake-smash sessions, or events have different formats. The best next step is to get in touch with your preferred date and group details for a personalised quote. -
What should we wear for a family photoshoot?
Coordinated, not matching. Pick a soft palette of 2–3 complementary colours and have everyone dress within it — solids and gentle textures photograph better than busy patterns or large logos. Comfort matters more than dressy: kids do best in clothes they can move and play in. For autumn outdoor sessions, layers, knits, and earthy tones work beautifully with the natural light. -
Who can I include in my family photo session?
Everyone is welcome — partners, children, grandparents, and even your dog. I plan a mix of group portraits and individual or smaller-grouping shots so every relationship in the family gets a moment in the gallery. For larger groups (10+), get in touch ahead of time so I can plan light and positioning to suit.
